We’re Sooo Back: Turning Plastic Scraps into Spooky Prints

1 min read

We are sooo back! Last Saturday, Oct 3rd, was our Filament Reclamation teams first extrusion day of the semester. In Jacobs Hall, our team worked with excess shredded plastic scraps to create brand new spools of recycled filament that was around 200-300 grams. Initially our spool was clumpy, but as we continued to make more progress and tweak around with different factors like temperature, speed of extrusion, cooling, and speed of spool, we gave the plastics a new life!

"Starting our extrusion testing! Turning discarded PLA back into 3D printer filament, one smooth strand at a time"

We have spent all the time to create a good quality recycled filament to be used for the 3D printer. This spool is currently intended to be used for the Wickedly Wasteless Sustainable Spooktacular, a fun night hosted by the Zero Waste Coalition and ReUse. Come find our ghost keychains (100% made of from our recent recycled spool) from 5 PM to 7 PM, October 30th on Lower Sproul. Don’t discard your plastics, recycle them instead!

That’s a wrap! (+ a spool). Take a look at our most recent workshop’s recycled filament, ready for its next print :)
