DESIGNING A CLOSED-LOOP RECYCLING SYSTEM FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY
The Team that Made it All Happen
Catherine Zhang
Extrusion Team (2020-2021)
Catherine is a second-year intending to major in Computer Science and Economics. She hopes to combine her interests in tech and environmental science by pursuing a career in sustainable development. Outside of academics, she enjoys hiking and playing guitar.
Yuniba Yagues
3D Printing and Mechanical Testing Team (2020-2021)
Yuniba graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering. She is interested in sustainable material development and clean energy. Her previous research interests include combustion, sorbents, catalysts, and many other topics. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, taking day trips, and doing yoga.
Emmy Yu
Extrusion Team (2019-2021)
Emmy graduated with a B.S in Chemical Engineering and a minor in Data Science. She started on the Extrusion team in Fall 2019, and researched different extrusion and cooling methods. Emmy’s research interests include nanoparticle/polymer synthesis, battery chemistry, and sustainable energy storage! Nonacademically, Emmy enjoys urban gardening and collecting houseplants.
Quinn Wong
Granulation Team (2019-2020)
Quinn graduated with B.S. in Genetics and Plant Biology. His interest in engineering and environmental sustainability is what attracted him to this project initially. At the start of Fall 2019, he joined as the sole member of the Granulation Team. Quinn operated a granulator that breaks down discarded 3D prints into smaller pieces for recycling. He’s an avid 3D modeler/printer with a slight addiction to video games. Quinn is now pursuing job opportunities that will enable him to contribute to a greener future.
Lauren Irie
Project Lead (2018-2020)
Lauren Irie graduated with a B.S in Chemistry and served as the Project Lead from Spring 2018 to Spring 2020. Lauren is interested in the intersection between sustainability and chemistry, specifically focused on polymeric materials. She did chemistry research in Prof. Ting Xu’s lab and chemical education research under Prof. Anne Baranger. Lauren went on to pursue a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University.
Scott Silva
Project Founder (2016-2019)
Nicole Panditi
Project Founder (2016-2018)
Nicole graduated in 2018 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Sustainability. She started the project due to her involvement in the 3D printing community at Cal, where she found the high volume of non-recyclable waste troubling. She currently works at Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation, and continues to collaborate with the project as a fiscal sponsor.
